The Klokkenluider Papers
Years ago, there were mysterious experiments carried out on trees
at the Forestry Research Station in Kananaskis, Alberta. The site
is now long abandoned and covered with a velvety covering of moss.
It's an eerie place; more like a graveyard than the bustling
research facility it once was. And the trees ... yes, the trees...
seem to watch and to listen in deathly silence.
Have you ever wondered about what became of the people who worked
there and all their research?
Doctor Willem Klokkenluider was the chief researcher at this
facility. In fact, it was his work that proved that the trees were
actually sentient.
As the project progressed, he became increasingly unsettled by the
ethical implications of his work. He began to spend more and more
time amongst his beloved trees. Then; one day, for no apparent
reason, he quit the project and retired to his cabin in nearby
Seebe. Without his leadership, the project quickly withered and
died. Everyone, with the exception of the doctor, seemed to forget
it ever existed. As time went on his criticisms of the project
became more vocal and more public. Then, suddenly, he disappeared
without a trace.
This is where our story begins…
Just prior to Doctor Klokkenluider's disappearance, his close
friend, Doctor Peter Hasenfuss, received a cryptic email from the
good doctor. Peter found it exceptionally odd for Willem to use
email. Willem prided himself on his mastery of penmanship and
seldom resorted to using anything but the post. However; Peter soon
realized that what was truly startling was the content. The email
provided the only clue to the sinister circumstances of Willem's
disappearance and a few veiled hints to the whereabouts of
“The Klokkenluider Papers”.
Here is a transcript of what the good doctor wrote:
My Dear Peter;
In the past few days, there have been strange men about the area.
They are asking questions ... so many difficult questions. I live
each day wondering if I shall see the next.
You are no doubt somewhat aware of my work carried out at the
Forestry Research Station in Kananaskis, Alberta. What you may not
know is that I was successful and proved the trees were sentient! I
was so unsettled by the implications that I left the project. I
suppose, I could have enjoyed a quiet retirement in relative
obscurity. But, Peter, you know me well enough to realize that was
never my way. And now, I fear I've made the fatal mistake of saying
too much ...
To keep my research logbook from falling into the wrong hands, I
posed as Mr. "John J. Smith" and made arrangements for it to be
hidden in a secluded place in nearby Calgary. I can’t trust
anyone here. Now, all I can do is pass you the attached shipping
label in the hopes that you, my dear friend, will know what to
do.
If you receive this, I pray, find my logbook and keep it safe! The
thought of it falling into the wrong hands is just too terrible to
contemplate.
I remain yours;
Willem
Unfortunately; Doctor Hasenfuss also disappeared shortly after
receiving this email.
Will you take up the search? Can you find "The Klokkenluider
Papers"?
All I managed to recover from Peter's computer was the ominous
email and the following mysterious shipping label.
Doctor
Klokkenluider’s Logbook is a red, bound, 3.5" x 5.5" journal
with a pocket at the back. The First-To-Find will discover a shiny
new Geo-Coin and have the chance to be the first to enter their
name in the doctors' logbook. Other sleuths will discover a stash
of Finders Cards in the pocket and are welcome to take one as a
memento. Please let me know if there are less than a half-dozen, so
that the stock can be replenished. Replacing the cache exactly as
found will ensure that others will have the same opportunity to
enjoy this puzzle.
Please do your best
to approach the cache in a way that will not attract attention and
does not leave an obvious "geo-trail". The latter is of particular
concern when there is snow on the ground.
Congratulations
to
"theallans",
"gardengorilla" and "Kaerran"
on their shared
First-To-Find!
