This is the first of three Alien Kiwi geocaches on the track up to the Rawhiti Cave, so you can claim three smiley faces with just one walk. Yay!
This cache has just been re-named from "Dreadlocks" to "Pining for a hot drink?" to reflect the replacement container we placed there on 10 February 2017. It's a pretty special camouflaged container with an interesting story attached to it: it got washed away from further up the valley in the floods of 2011, never to be seen again.
FIVE YEARS later in 2016, after a subsequent flood, a local farmer found it washed up in his paddock, still intact! The farmer had no idea what geocaching was and because our geocaching name and contact details had washed off the geocaching label on the outside, he had no way of contacting us. But he realised it was something a bit special so rather than toss it in the wheelie bin, his wife got on the computer, found the site, joined up and started looking for geocaches nearby to see whose container it might be. Luckily there aren't all that many within 10km radius of the farm so she contacted us and...voilà! We were amazed to see it again and very happy to get it back.
The cache is only about one minute from the car park, along a flat, forested track. It’s approximately 16 metres before the dry river bed and orange track marker. There's plenty of room inside for Trackables.
We placed a cache here to entice more people up to Rawhiti Cave, so we have hidden two geocaches on the way to the Rawhiti Cave Earth Cache (GC33KME) and this is the one which is closest to the car park.
Please make sure you replace the cache exactly as you found it so it's all in place for the next visitor.
In case you are attempting this cache without going on up the hill to Rawhiti Cave, here are the driving directions: from Takaka, drive east towards Pohara Beach. At Motupipi turn right into Glenview Road and then left into Packard Road. Rawhiti Cave is signposted from near the end of Packard Road on the left, through private farm land, along a gravel road through a couple of gates to an informal car parking area. Please ensure you leave gates exactly as you found them. NO DOGS ALLOWED.
