Geocache Description:

I love old buildings and the history behind them, so when a geocache at this location was archived, I decided to hide one here myself. I hid this geocache mostly because it is an interesting location. So, soak up the history and think about what it was like in years past for the people who lived here.

In order to NOT freak out the neighbors, please look for this one during daylight hours.

When I was a kid growing up in Lockport, and I would ask my mother to buy me something, sometimes she would say "you are going to put me in the poor house". The Lockport poor house was still active in this location, but I didn't know that. I thought it was in an old decrepit building across from DeSales High School!

The former cache owner gave these facts: information from 1857 described this location it as a POOR HOUSE, housing "lunatics and paupers". It was a working farm at the time and the usual population was around 95. The site remained The Niagara County Poor House and Infirmary until the 1960's. Somewhere on the grounds there is a Potter's Field where the residents were buried in unmarked graves, but I was unable to locate it.

The campus later became called the County Infirmary Medical Center and then the Headquarters for Social Services. It is now mostly empty except for a few offices in one building and the county garage in the back.
