A cache placed in memory of the severe forest fire that occurred here on June 17, 2011. Log and pens, and a bit of swag and lots of extra HoustonHerp pens to get the ball rolling.
This area was devastated by a severe forest fire on June 17, 2011. The fire was so dangerous that the Texas Forest Service was called in to assist numerous area fire departments who responded to the blaze. Since this fire was less than 0.3 miles from my house, it gave my family and I quite a scare; in fact, during the afternoon, we even had a TANKER plane dropping flame retardant on the fire! Fortunately, no buildings were damaged and no one was injured.
If you are standing at GZ and look to the northwest, you will see one of the areas that was hardest hit; scorched stumps and trees are all that's left of a once-thriving forest. However, this is still a living ecosystem, and new herbaceous plants, then shrubs, and finally trees, will slowly repopulate the area. If you visit this cache, I hope you will take the time to take a photo of the area to the northwest. It would be great to post pictures as time goes by to show how this once forested area recovers from the great 'Birnamwood Burn of June 17, 2011'.
