Geocache Description:

The gorge is great wee walk and the river was not what I was expecting. At time the river is a narrow torrent squeezed against the cliffs and other time a broad expanse over the singles. There are several impressive right angle bends of which one is very close to GZ.

Skip Q1 & 2. The sign is missing.

As proof of visit read the sign board and send an email.
1) How far did the glaciers extend?
2) Who prepared the information on the sign board.
3) When facing the sign there is a cliff face across the way to your right, near the location of the coal mine. At what angle, as measured from horizintal, do the grey sediment layers lie?
4) Which volcano overlaid a sill of indigenous rocks (some further research maybe required to answer this question)

The oldest exposed rocks in the area are those of the bedrock greywacke, a hard, fine grained sandstone. They are overlain by more recent igneous rocks formed by volcanic activity which gave rise to lava flows ofrhyolite, pitchstones and andesite. Coal measures overlie the rhyolites and andesites and vary in thickness from a few centimetres to about three metres.

Seven main periods of glacial advance have been recorded in the Rakaia River. Down-cutting of the riverbed occurred between ice advances producing the terrace sequences flanking the gorge. The outwash of gravels have formed what are now the Canterbury Plains.
