Geocache Description:

The title is a little hyperbole in two respects:-
At 1054metres (3,461 feet) Liathach is one of the giant UK mountains.
With its summit just 2 km from the road as the crow flies, it presents an almost impregnable southern flank to passing motorists - and the north side is even more fearsome!
With only 3 or 4 paths climbing steeply up through its craggy ramparts it is a tough climb for any hill walker but the bonus is that the summit ridge has many interesting scrambling possibilities over rounded sandstone pinnacles, although these can be by-passed by an easy path on the south side if you don’t feel up to tackling them.
The cache itself is not a traditional 35 mm film microcache, but something slightly longer and thinner than a vitamin pot Alas the original pot got nibbled by a hungry high altitude rodent.
Originally all it contained was a log roll & pencil plus a few small objects including a microcoin.
It is placed 30 metres (0.03km) due south of Spidean a'Choire Leith, the highest of the 7 summits on the mountain, the summit cairn of which is at N 57 33.851 W 005 27.814 (NG 92939 57957). The cache is wedged securely in the crack between 2 large quartzite blocks and is covered by a small cairn made from 3 or 4 more flattish blocks, just a few paces from a sandy ‘path’ which leads nowhere in particular.
As the whole area is a jumble of quartzite another clue is to find a rock at the listing co-ordinates with lots of green lichen (Rhizocarpon geographicum) on its west side and the cache is immediately north of this. Fortunately satellite reception is fantastic!

Just to be on the safe side I best confirm that there is no easy descent off the eastern end of the massif. The easiest path drops down south of the col between Stob a'Coire Liath Mhor (NG 93200 58100) and Stuc a'Choire Dhuibh Bhig (NG 94221 58214)

I am extremely grateful to geocacher trahciul for agreeing to help me maintain this cache, should this become necessary. As the log has spaces for at least 60 entries I hope this will not be for some time.
However please help by making sure the lid is snapped on properly after you have signed the log and restrain yourself from filling the pot with bits of "geotat" which might soak up water and make everything else inside go soggy!

A HUGE "thank you" to fitfish for replacing the original container after it had been nibbled by one of the Scottish Haggis that frequent the mountains in this part of Torridon. You help is very much appreciated as I wouldn't be able to keep so many "far flung" caches going without the help of the "White Knights of Geocaching"
