The city of Fort Myers Beach is located on Estero Island, this barrier island is a long , narrow , offshore deposits of sand or sediments that parallel the coast line. This barrier island is 7 1/2 miles long and about 1/4 to 1/2 mile wide in some places. The formation of this island started about 18,000 years ago when the last ice age ended. As the glaciers melted and receded , the levels begain to rise , and flooded areas behind the beach ridges at that time. The raising waters carried sediments from those beach ridges and deposited them along shallow areas just off the new coast lines. Waves and currents continued to bring in sediments that built up ,forming the barrier island.
As you travel over the Matanzas Pass Bridge aka the Sky Bridge, to this barrier island, look to your left and right to see a great view of the barrier island. After parking you can walk up the walkway to the top of the bridge for a great view of the mainland and the barrier island.
THIS IS A PAID METER PARKING AREA CLOSE TO THE EARTHCACHE OR YOU CAN TRY TO LOCATE A NON-PAY PARKING.
