The White Well Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The White Well was built circa 1360 by the monks to supply water to Bishop Grandisson's palace further down the hill.
The well has been constructed using local red sandstone which would have aided the shaping of the curvature of the well.
The water is crystal clear a sign that it is being nicely filtered on it's journey to the surface.
It is not known if it is a holy well or had any healing powers,as was the case in many early wells.Originally it had a capping stone which is now missing.
Adjacent to the well is a 19th century pump house which was used to pump the water up the hill by The Temperance Society for 'the taking of the waters'as they were anti alcohol.
I hope you enjoy this cache as much as I enjoyed placing it,the area has certainly got a certain aura about it and feels quite magical as if the monks are still watching you!
Please do not clamber around the pump house or well as both are delicate and have suffered from some recent mindless vandalism,it's important to keep these kind of sites for future generations to enjoy.
The cache is a camo container suitable for trackables and some swaps.
Bring your own pen.
Cache placed with kind permission of The Landowner.
