While the cache itself may not be that exciting, the history behind the nearby courthouse is. This courthouse served James County, Tennessee from 1913 until 1919. (An earlier courthouse had served the counties’ needs since its’ conception in 1871.) James County merged with neighboring Hamilton County in 1919, the first county merger ever in Tennessee state history. While James County is “lost” now, in the day the county made Ooltewah quite the happening place. While once a town of “citadel of temperance”, the East Tennessee & Georgia Railroad made Ooltewah a bustling railroad town by 1857. The railroad made Ooltewah a natural choice for the county seat. After the demise of James County, the still-standing courthouse served as a school, civic center, and even headquarters for people to have rabies shots given to their dogs! In 1977 the courthouse became a police station for Hamilton County, and since 2000 the landmark has served as a wedding chapel. While problem-ridden almost from the start, James County still had its admirers, who affectionately referred to the county as “Jim”. I thought it was super-cool that we had such awesome history right among us, and I hope you enjoy searching for this cache!
