HOLLERING PLACE HISTORY
Before the first Europeans sailed into the Coos Bay estuary, the Hollering Place was the center for transportation, commerce and, without a doubt, communication.
The Hollering Place, or Ellekatitch as the Coos Indians called it, was actually on the North Spit directly across the bay from their villages at present Empire. People traveling north or south along North Spit would holler for someone to row over a dugout and provide passage. Later white settlers adopted the same practice.
CAMP CASTAWAY HISTORY
Camp Castaway (1852-1852) - Established 3 Jan 1852 by Lt. H.W. Stanton, C troop of the 1st U.S. Dragoons, and the other survivors from the sinking of the transport ship Captain Lincoln. The transport sailed from San Francisco bound for Fort Orford and was wrecked just north of the entrance to Coos Bay Harbor. The camp was abandoned in May 1852 when the survivors were rescued and taken to Port Orford.
There is another cache located at the Camp called “Camp Castaway” (CG1PNJR). You will need a four-wheel drive or enjoy a nice hike on the Horse Pack Trail.
Congratz to Steve'N'Nancy on the FTF!!
