The Common which was formally the
Wangaratta aerodrome is a grassland area of 42.6 hectares. It
adjoins a comparable area of public land that is managed as a
conservation reserve, giving a combined area of about 72
hectares.
Despite the likelihood that this area was
originally an open box woodland which was cleared to make way for
the aerodrome, the Common is now considered a grassland because
much of the original grassy ground flora has remained. About 96
species of native plants have been listed, with a particularly high
representation of grasses and spring flowering plants. Its
importance as a grassland area is in the combination and diversity
of grass species present, and the fact that the area is a large
compact area rather than linear. One species present, Diuris
punctata, is currently considered vulnerable in
Victoria.
