ExploreWV’s third geocaching series is Haunted WV, which takes geocachers to 20 of the Mountain State’s spookiest locations – that’s asylums, prisons, cemeteries, and much more. Some of these cache sites have even been featured on TV shows such as SyFy’s Ghost Hunters, TLC’s Ghost Adventures, and MTV’s Fear.

Keeping with ExploreWV tradition, there will be a challenge associated with the Haunted WV series. If you choose to complete the challenge, you must “collect the ghosts” in each geocache and place them on an official Haunted WV Bingo Card. The first 100 people to complete the challenge will be awarded a limited-edition Haunted WV t-shirt so you can let everyone know that you’ve been spooked in West Virginia. (Limited sizes available)

Perhaps one of the most bizarre tales is that of Ike’s Tomb in Mt. Welcome Cemetery in Pleasants County. According to legend, in 1904, a young boy by the name of Ike passed away and was originally buried on his parent’s property. Shortly after the burial, Ike was moved to Mt. Welcome Cemetery where he was laid to rest in a 10 x 10 tomb along with numerous trinkets and toys from his life. Once Ike was in his tomb, local accounts say that Ike’s mother would lay by his gravesite each night so she could still be with her child. Some tales even suggest she cleaned the tomb and constantly talked to Ike and the other children in the graveyard. Years later, Ike’s mother passed away from what many believe was exposure to the elements from spending the night in the cemetery. Today, many locals report a woman dressed in white roaming the cemetery, which could possibly be the mother of Ike, waiting to be with her son.

Please use etiquette and be courteous when geocaching and place the container exactly where you found it. If there are any problems with the cache including maintenance alerts, please inform ExploreWV as soon as possible. Do not wander far from the cache site and be aware that some of these locations may not be suitable for the faint of the heart.
