Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1755 or 1757
– July 12, 1804) was a Founding Father, soldier, economist,
political philosopher, one of America's first constitutional
lawyers and the first Secretary of the Treasury. He has been
described as one whom "more than any other designed the Government
of the United States". Hamilton wrote much of the Federalist
Papers, still an important source for constitutional
interpretation.
Hamilton helped defeat his bitter personal enemy Burr and elect
Jefferson as president. After opposing Adams, the candidate of his
own party, Hamilton was left with few political friends. In 1804,
as the next presidential election approached, Hamilton again
opposed the candidacy of Burr. Taking offense at some of Hamilton's
comments, Burr challenged him to a duel and mortally wounded
Hamilton, who died within days.
