Geocache Description:

A straightforward cache in a pretty part of a village often driven through but not explored. En route to more adventurous hides, this is one of those caches which brings you to a place you might never have been to without geocaching. Please keep to the paths. Suitable for all though there are steps just before you reach GZ.

The Anglican parish Church of St. Andrew in Backwell, Somerset, England dates from the 12th century. It was altered and enlarged in the 13th, 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building.

The four stage tower at the west end of the church is over 100 feet (30 m) tall and dates from the 15th century. It contains a ring of ten (previously eight) bells, two of which are medieval.

The font dates from the 12th century. It consists of a circular bowl with cable moulding, and a circular stem with foliate moulding on the base. It was restored in 1907. The Rood Screen is from the early 16th century.

The churchyard includes a 14th century preaching cross and a charity stone.
The earliest graves date from 17th and 18th century and are found on the south side of the church. During Medieval times the North side of the Parish church would have been unconsecrated, and used by parishioners for social and recreational gatherings.

Within the graveyard is also a crucifix which is a memorial to a local airman, Pat Garnett, who was killed during a dog fight with Baron von Richthofen, the Red Baron. It was made by A G Walker (famous for sculpting the equestrian statue of John Wesley)and was restored and moved to the churchyard in 1997. For more info on the memorial and other work done within the church, see link

The parish is part of the Benefice of Backwell with Chelvey and Brockley within the Deanery of Portishead.
Follow the path to the kissing gate and into the field for views and good conker finding territory!

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
