This is a nice easy cache right in the center of Killala town. It’s near the round tower and there are parking places right next to it up the lane way, it is all well signposted. As it’s in the middle of a town it is preferable if the cache is only visited during daylight hours so as not to have anybody wondering why somebody would be wandering about the place in the middle of the night.
The building itself is one of the best examples of a round tower in the country. Like all round towers it was probably used as a belfry and probably to provide a safe place in times of turmoil. There is a slight bulge about halfway up, where the tower was repaired along with the roof in the early 19th century by the OPW. The damage was caused by lightning strikes.
