Cardiff Docks? Tiger Bay? Cardiff Bay?
The waterfront area to the south of the city of Cardiff has been known as many things over the years. At one point, Cardiff Docks was the biggest coal exporting dock in the world, and where the first one million pound cheque was signed. Tiger Bay was notorious for its lawlessness, with a number of murders and other crimes committed by seaman passing through going unsolved. (As a child, my grandma was banned from going south of the main railway line by her parents, because of Tiger Bay’s reputation!). As a key British port, Cardiff Docks was bombed heavily by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Coupled with the decline of the coal industry, the Docks area fell into disrepair in the second half of the twentieth century.
The Cardiff Bay Development Corporation was established in 1987 to regenerate the area. The largest, and most controversial, part of the regeneration scheme was the building of the Cardiff Bay barrage in 1999. Now, the regeneration of Cardiff Bay is recognised as one of the most successful regeneration schemes in the world. Cardiff Bay is now home to one of only two five star hotels in Wales, the National Assembly for Wales and the Wales Millennium Centre, as well as many restaurants, bars and tourist sights.
This is my first cache, and with it I have decided to pay compliment to my adopted hometown of Cardiff, specifically the Bay area where I have lived for the last six years. You will need to study the pictures below to find out the locations where you will find the answers to the questions. The listed co-ordinates are for Roald Dahl Plass, a good starting point for this cache. The final cache is small and magnetic and within Cardiff Bay. GZ is usually quite busy, so stealth is required.
Please, please, PLEASE ensure that the cache is put back carefully, you may also wish to bring tweezers to extract the log.

A = “King Coal” helped turn Cardiff into a modern and prosperous city. Members of the South Wales Institute of Engineers played a large part in the extraction, development and transportation of coal, iron and steel from South Wales. The Institute was founded in 185A.
B = As a port city, many local men served in the Merchant Navy during World War 2, and many of those did not return home, as this striking memorial attests to. William Henke, who this plaque is dedicated to, was born in 19B8.
C = The Queen Alexandra Dock was opened in 1907 and is one of only two remaining working docks in Cardiff. It is located near C70 degrees.
D = Although coal is the most famous cargo that passed through Cardiff Docks, there were of course many others that made their way to more exotic climes. Where is the sunny haven? The number of letters in your answer is D.
E = This is one of the most visible remnants of Cardiff Docks. What colour is the arm of the item? The number of letters in your answer is E.
F = Robert Scott's ship Terra Nova left Cardiff on it's ill-fated voyage to the South Pole on 15 June 1910. The number of letters in the designer and sculptor's surname is F.
