In The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon a 9 year old girl is hiking on the Appalachian Trail with her mom and brother when she strays from the trail. She is lost for days with only her portable radio for company. She's a huge fan of Tom Gordon, a Red Sox relief pitcher, and she listens to games and fantasizes that he will save her. Carrie is a misfit high school girl who is hassled by her classmates and terrorized by her mother. When she is pushed to her limits she realizes that she has telekinetic powers. As she leaves the prom the gym erupts into a ball of fire.
