ExploreWV’s third geocaching series is Haunted WV, which takes geocachers to 20 of the Mountain State’s spookiest locations – that’s asylums, prisons, cemeteries, and much more. Some of these cache sites have even been featured on TV shows such as SyFy’s Ghost Hunters, TLC’s Ghost Adventures, and MTV’s Fear.
Keeping with ExploreWV tradition, there will be a challenge associated with the Haunted WV series. If you choose to complete the challenge, you must “collect the ghosts” in each geocache and place them on an official Haunted WV Bingo Card. The first 100 people to complete the challenge will be awarded a limited-edition Haunted WV t-shirt so you can let everyone know that you’ve been spooked in West Virginia. (Limited sizes available)

NOTICE 4-29-13: CHALLENGE ENDED. On behalf of ExploreWV, I'd like to thank all that visited this cache and took part in the Haunted WV challenge. While this challenge has ended, I have adopted this hide from ExploreWV and will be keeping it active. I have enjoyed reading the logs of past visitors and hope to read many more in the future. Nestled in the campus of Davis and Elkins College sits two mansions that are now being used as administrative buildings for the school. Countless stories from students and staff report that poltergeist activity is common in these buildings, such as doors closing by themselves or guests feeling an invisible hand touch them. It is also rumored that figures have been seen in the basement of Halliehurst and the mansion has been known to house a friendly ghost that often keeps accidents from happening to its guests, such as pulling guests back before tumbling down the stairs. To add to the spooky tales, a story explains that at the time of renovations to Halliehurst, an empty coffin was found in the basement. When found, the coffin was apparently empty but some paranormal researchers attribute the wooden coffin to the paranormal events that regularly occur in Halliehurst. Abstract figures are also seen from the windows of both mansions, as if yearning to escape into the outside world.
Please use etiquette and be courteous when geocaching and place the container exactly where you found it. If there are any problems with the cache including maintenance alerts, please inform ExploreWV as soon as possible. Do not wander far from the cache site and be aware that some of these locations may not be suitable for the faint of the heart.
