FTF PRIZE! A brand new GPS-shaped unactivated geocoin.
The cliff band knows as the Bayards are a part of the Shawangunk
Ridge (also known as "The Gunks"). They are located to the north of
Millbrook Cliff, and south of The Near Trapps. The name "Bayards"
comes from the name of a couple who owned a tavern that climbers
would pass on their way to the cliffs. However, you're not likely
to see any climbers on the Bayards cliff, as much of the cliff face
is privately owned, and/or the quality is poor for climbing.
To get to this cache, hike the blue blazed Millbrook Ridge Trail
in the Mohonk Preserve. Park either at the West Trapps parking lot
of the Mohonk Preserve (go over the steel bridge on Trapps Road and
quickly turn left onto the blue blazed trail), or from the main
parking lot of Minnewaska State Park Preserve (via the Millbrook
Mountain Trail). The hike is shorter coming from Mohonk. Both the
Mohonk Preserve and the Minnewaska State Park Preserve require fees
to hike on their lands. To get to the cache, which is an ammo can,
you need to do an easy short scramble down some rocks along the
side of the trail. Please re-hide the cache well.
The Mohonk Preserve is a
private land conservation organization established to protect the
Shawangunk Ridge, it is not public land funded by the government.
Therefore, there is a day use fee to use the preserve which funds
its maintenance and programs. For the current day pass fees, check
the Mohonk Preserve website. The Mohonk Preserve does allow
geocaching on its land, as long as it is along established trails
and carriage roads. Note that dogs must be leashed at all
times.
