The track you are on here was once a railway line and crossed the road by a level crossing.
The line was the Forth & Clyde Railway that ran from Stirling to Balloch and was opened in 1856. Balloch was also served by a line from Glasgow operated by the Caledonian & Dumbartonshire Railway.
Through connections with the Strathendrick & Aberfoyle Railway the line provided a route into the Trossachs and this made it very popular with Victorian Tourists who, inspired by Sir Walter Scotts writing, were keen to visit Loch Katrine or Loch Lomond. It was later absorbed into the North British Railway and there was an engine shed on the current site of the Ambulance Depot near Stirling Bridge for which I have searched to no avail for a photograph. The full line closed to passengers in 1934 but the Aberfoyle link lasted until 1959.
The road then was a minor road probably only a track - its development as part of the Stirling ring road is very recent. The rail track continuation can be seen across the road.
There are several other caches connected with the railways in this area.
