Um filão é uma zona de falha ou fracturada no terreno, por onde
a lava ascendeu, podendo atingir a superfície ou parar a meio
caminho. O filão dos Frades, corresponde, como o próprio nome
indica, a uma intrusão filoneana de natureza traquítica,
actualmente exposta por erosão. Como se depreende, o filão dos
Frades só é visível porque o material que existia à sua volta
entretanto foi erodido, ficando a rocha do filão.
Sobre a EarthCache:
Terá de completar três tarefas:
a) Olhando à sua volta encontra mais algum filão para além da rocha
do frade e da freira?
b) Observe a textura e dureza das rochas do frade e da freira, que
conclui?
c) Qual a distância em metros entre a rocha do frade e da
freira?
Também e apesar de ser opcional, por favor, tire uma foto no local
com o seu GPS e mostre-a juntamente com o seu log.

sua visita.

A vein ("filão") is a fault zone or fracture in a field, where the
lava rose, reaching the surface or stop halfway.
This geologic formation, called rocks of “Frade e
Freira”, corresponds, as its name implies, to a vein (seam)
intrusion of trachytic nature that has been exposed by
erosion.
Understandably, the rocks of “Frade e Freira” are only
visible because the material that existed around has been eroded,
leaving the rock of the vein exposed.
The rocks of Frade and Freira are unique as a vein because of
their formation: two vertical rocks.
About the EarthCache:
You will have to perform three tasks:
a) Observing the surrounding meadows, do you see any more
veins?.
b) Observe the texture and hardness of the rocks of “frade
and freira” and describe your conclusions.
c) what is the distance between Frade and Freira rocks?
Being OPTIONAL, and since we appreciate images, publish along with
your log an image of the place (include yourself if you want)
