Geocache Description:

This is a cache that brings you to the Quinnipiac River and Red Bridge. The river begins about eight miles south of Hartford in Deadwood Swamp, and winds southward for 38 miles until it reaches New Haven Harbor. The paved trail nearby was an old railroad line that runs along a picturesque mile of the Quinnipiac Gorge. This area has a lot of history associated with it. In the Gorge lies Carpenter's Dam, which powered a civil war button factory. In the early 20th century factory workers crossed the river in Meriden at Red Bridge, a historic lenticular truss bridge that has been restored to its former glory. This area has an annual canoe race held here each May that begins in Southington and ends here. The DEP and the QRWA stocks this area with trout just before opening day.

Parking for a few cars is available at the trail head, a few more on the other side of Red Bridge, or across the street at the future home of the QRWA.

This cache replaces what was my first night cache. Since the trail was “improved” by paving it over with asphalt it is no longer open after dark. This and other reasons called for the demise of that cache but I hope you enjoy this one.
