ExploreWV’s third geocaching series is Haunted WV, which takes geocachers to 20 of the Mountain State’s spookiest locations – that’s asylums, prisons, cemeteries, and much more. Some of these cache sites have even been featured on TV shows such as SyFy’s Ghost Hunters, TLC’s Ghost Adventures, and MTV’s Fear.

Right before the Civil War, many areas in West Virginia tried to ease into the wine-making business and the Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars were one of the initial success stories of wine in the Mountain State. However, the Civil War came into the area in the mid-1800s and by 1870, nearly all of the wine companies in West Virginia were gone, including the one operating the Dutch Hollow cellars. After wine production stopped, it is rumored that the cellars were used as a stop on the Underground Railroad and today, all that is left are three of the rumored six stone cellars. But, something (or someone?) else remained. Witnesses have said that the Wine Cellar Park is haunted and misty figures and abnormalities commonly show up on film and pictures taken of the cellars. Reports have also described a sense of paranoia when walking along the walking trail in the park.

Please use etiquette and be courteous when geocaching and place the container exactly where you found it. If there are any problems with the cache including maintenance alerts, please inform ExploreWV as soon as possible. Do not wander far from the cache site and be aware that some of these locations may not be suitable for the faint of the heart.
