Geocache Description:

ExploreWV's
Haunted Challenge

The Mothman

Photobucket

ExploreWV’s third geocaching series is Haunted WV, which takes geocachers to 20 of the Mountain State’s spookiest locations – that’s asylums, prisons, cemeteries, and much more. Some of these cache sites have even been featured on TV shows such as SyFy’s Ghost Hunters, TLC’s Ghost Adventures, and MTV’s Fear.

Keeping with ExploreWV tradition, there will be a challenge associated with the Haunted WV series. If you choose to complete the challenge, you must “collect the ghosts” in each geocache and place them on an official Haunted WV Bingo Card. The first 100 people to complete the challenge will be awarded a limited-edition Haunted WV t-shirt so you can let everyone know that you’ve been spooked in West Virginia. (Limited sizes available)

To register for the Haunted WV series and to download your Haunted WV Bingo Card, visit us online at Geocache WV. You may also add us on Facebook at Explore WV.

In 1966, strange sightings were reported just outside the small river town of Point Pleasant. A dark, shadowy figure with wings and red glowing eyes frightened the townspeople and the figure came to be known as the Mothman for his mutated moth/man-like features. Encounters with the Mothman continued for one year up until the Silver Bridge Collapse of 1967. After the horrible accident, many believed that the Mothman was a bad omen and served as a premonition for the collapse. Today, Point Pleasant plays up its ghostly history and the town offers a thorough Mothman Museum as well as a statue visualizing the creature. Mothman sightings are still reported today in the Cliffton F. McClintic Wildlife Management Area which is where the Mothman was first seen. The legend is also the basis for the Hollywood movie The Mothman Prophecies. For more information on the legend of the Mothman, visit Mothmanlives.com .

Please use etiquette and be courteous when geocaching and place the container exactly where you found it. If there are any problems with the cache including maintenance alerts, please inform ExploreWV as soon as possible. Do not wander far from the cache site and be aware that some of these locations may not be suitable for the faint of the heart.

Special thanks to dio4x4 for placing and maintaining this geocache.
