Everton to Beechworth.
This cache is placed at the junction of Diffey Road and the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. It is again one for the cyclists but it is easily accessible by car. A little stealth may be required although generally this is a quiet section, but it is very open and there may be people outside the big shed at the vineyard across the road.
The Everton to Beechworth line opened in 1876 and Baarmutha had its own station on the Lower Three Mile. It was originally called Lee's Crossing but was renamed Baarmutha on 21st November 1904. In the 1920's two trains a day ran to Beechworth. It was possible to catch the 9.00am, spend the morning in town (Beechworth) and be home in time for lunch. The cost was sixpence. Intending passengers were required to use a red flag to stop the train as it entered the station.
Apparently everyone used to gather at the station on Christmas Eve each year, just to see who was coming home to spend the festive season with their families.
A large mulberry tree grew near the station until young pranksters used the juice from the ripe berries to paint the station red, whereupon angry railway authorities had it cut down.
Where the Baarmutha Station sign stands today is not the actual site of the station. It was moved relatively recently from in front of the closest house paddock further down the track towards Beechworth. Near the house there is actually a raised mound (the old platform?) and opposite that there is an old (signal?) post - and that is all that is left today.
The station closed on 30th June 1955.
The cache is a micro so LOG only and please bring your own PEN.
