Geocache Description:

Micro cache in the fortress Gripe in Split. The fortress is located east of downtown on the hill that is now part of the eponymous city districts.

Fortress Gripe the modern era fortifications and defensive fortifications built in the 17th century for the defense of Split from the Turks. Today is the seat of the Croatian Maritime Museum. The city of Split in the early Middle Ages, was defended by walls of Diocletian's palace, within which was housed. The expansion of the city center was created a need to raise additional medieval fortifications. Penetration of the Turks in the Balkans by introducing new ways of warfare with guns, Split defensive walls were no longer appropriate for the defense of guns. During the Kandyan war (1645.-1669.) Between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire, the military operations took place on the territory of Dalmatia. Residents of the city sought of the Venetian government to build a fortress for the defense of the city from Turkish attacks. Venice has finally decided to meet the demands of citizens of Split and ordered the construction of a new city with fortifications system of a filled with soil bastions (terrapienata) coupled with strong walls (Cortina). Similarly, ordered the construction of the fortress Gripe also terrapienata system. To determine the city and the construction of the fort was in charge of a military engineer Alessandro Magli. After Venice, Austria takes over the fortress and build barracks for their own purposes. As such it was used until the beginning of the 80s of last century. Fortress Gripe served the Venetian Republic, the French Empire, Austria's Empire, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Socialist Yugoslavia and at the end the Republic of Croatia. She was the first ship under the Yugoslav flag with five-pointed star which has entered into foreign waters (October 3 at the Italian port of Bari). For a time he served as a ship-base, the headquarters of the Delegation of the Army,. He held the connection between island of Vis and other parts of the free territory on the coast and islands with ports in southern Italy, transporting units and wounded, and material support for the Army,. The ship received the Order of National Liberation in 1964. It is preserved in the Croatian Maritime Museum in Split free counters
