Brown Recluse Spider Bite Experience:Sat-09-03-11 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

wademercer: Time for these to retire. Feel sad that a few cachers have littered the Dfw area with thousands of poorly rated caches... all to appease a few loopers... not sure how you can brag about a hundred or more loops when most are from falsely rated caches! Also frustrating that the dfw cachers aren’t discouraging this bad behavior. I feel the north Texas geocaching association should be spearheading a movement to encourage cachers to rate their caches appropriately. To have some pride in the cachers and caches they represent. Instead, they actively participate in their Denton overrated events, and enjoy another false loop. They should be discouraging inaccurate cache ratings. Txga leadership should be modeling the best geocaching behavior for others to follow. Step up.

Saturday. Labor day weekend! When I woke up, the first thing I looked at was my shin. The swelling had increased significently from the night before. The area I suspected was the bite area had grown too. The area of redness was about 15 cm in diameter now. I dont remember ever having a bite like this in the past! I showed my wife who immediately said I needed to go to the emergency room to get a doctor to look at the bite.

At the ER the doctor confirmed that he felt it was a bite of some kind but could not say what insect had bitten me. He did a few tests and said he suspected a staff infection (possibly MSRA) and that the infection could be more serious than the bite because of its location (on my shin, directly over the tibia). He was
concerned that the infection could spread into my bone. I was given several antibiotic injections. He also prescribed several medications:

Bactrum DS

Cleocin

Flagyl

Given the behavior of these medications (powerful antibiotics to kill bacteria), it was also recommended that I supplement my "good bacteria" with bacteria cultures. It was recommended that I eat multiple servings of yogurt daily as well as to take suppliments of acidophilus cultures daily. If the "good bacteria" were not supplimented it was possible I could develop yeast infections in my mouth and along my digestive tract. We discussed opening the bite and cleaning it out, but he felt given the infection that it would be better to leave the area alone and let my body fight the infection. Opening the wound could spread the infection. I left the hospital with prescriptions and a reminder to immediately return if the bite area got worse or began to drain.

I've inlcuded a few pictures of my experience on the "Brown Recluse Spider Bite Experience:Tue-09-13-11" GC349F7 cache page. Since some people may not appreciate them (they are a little gross) they are part of the gallery rather than being displayed on the main cache page. Ive added a few notes to them as well!

The container used in this series of caches are the actual containers my medications came in. I hope you have enjoyed the series!
