Haunted Challenge

ExploreWV’s third geocaching series is Haunted WV, which takes geocachers to 20 of the Mountain State’s spookiest locations – that’s asylums, prisons, cemeteries, and much more. Some of these cache sites have even been featured on TV shows such as SyFy’s Ghost Hunters, TLC’s Ghost Adventures, and MTV’s Fear.

Keeping with ExploreWV tradition, there will be a challenge associated with the Haunted WV series. If you choose to complete the challenge, you must “collect the ghosts” in each geocache and place them on an official Haunted WV Bingo Card. The first 100 people to complete the challenge will be awarded a limited-edition Haunted WV t-shirt so you can let everyone know that you’ve been spooked in West Virginia. (Limited sizes available)

The West Virginia Penitentiary operated in the northern panhandle for over 100 years. The facility closed in the mid 1990s but not before it earned a reputation as being one of the most violent prisons in America. Home to places of terror such as the electric chair “Old Sparky” (which was used to execute 9 inmates) and the legendary Sugar Shack (which was home to murders), this gothic structure has been featured on numerous paranormal shows and it has its share of shadow figures, disembodied voices, and heavy growls. Those inmates who perished while serving time in the prison were typically buried in nearby Whitegate Cemetery, while others ended up in unmarked graves in the cemetery in the area now known as Grand Vue Park.
