Riceboro is the oldest existing town in Liberty County, named
"Riceborough" in 1797. The creeks and lowlands in the area made
perfect conditions for rice planting, and the North Newport River
was important for convenient transportation of the product to
Savannah from the county. There were several well-known plantations
in the Riceboro area. Montevideo, Cedar Hill, and Woodmanston were
just a few.
