Mes randonnées sur l'heure du dîner m'ont souvent amené dans un vieux quartier près de l'autoroute Bonaventure. Des recherches m'ont appris un pan intéressant de l'histoire de Montréal. Ma quatrième Wherigo vous invite donc à un parcours de 12 étapes (environ 2 kms) dans le quartier Griffintown. Prévoir au moins 1 heure.


2022-11-02 A NEW CARTRIDGE IS AVAILABLE TO FIX THE DISAPPEARANCE OF CERTAIN STAGES

My excursions on the lunch hour often led me in an old area near the Bonaventure highway. Research taught me a piece of interesting history of Montreal. So my fourth Wherigo takes you into a 12 steps tour (approx. 2 kms) into the area Griffintown. Expect at least 1 hour.


Griffintown est un ancien quartier ouvrier du Sud-Ouest de Montréal. Le quartier est situé entre la rue Notre-Dame, la rue McGill et la rue Guy. Il a été peuplé par des Irlandais débarqués à Grosse-Île en 1847. Fuyant la famine de leur pays d'origine, plusieurs furent attirés par les possibilités de vie meilleure au Canada. Ils ont fortement contribué à la construction du pont Victoria et du Canal de Lachine. Une bonne endurance physique et la tolérance à des journées de travail de quinze heures étaient les principales exigences. Plusieurs ouvriers travaillèrent au port, dans les usines, ou à la construction du chemin de fer Grand Trunk. La communauté irlandaise se rassemblait à l'église Sainte-Anne, détruite en 1970. En 1963, la ville de Montréal décida de raser le quartier en créant une zone industrielle. Le quartier fut finalement renommé en Faubourg-des-Récollets. Il fait partie de l'arrondissement du Sud-Ouest.

Griffintown is a former working class district of Southwest of Montreal. The area is located between the streets Notre-Dame, McGill and Guy. It was populated by Irish disembarked at Grosse Ile in 1847. Fleeing famine in their country of origin, many were attracted by the opportunities of a better life in Canada. They have contributed greatly to the Victoria Bridge and the Lachine Canal construction. Good physical endurance and tolerance to fifteen hours work days were the main requirements. Several workers worked at the port, in factories, or construction of Grand Trunk Railway. The Irish community met together at St. Anne Church, destroyed in 1970. In 1963, the City of Montreal decided to raze the neighborhood by creating an industrial zone. The area was eventually renamed Faubourg des Récollets. It is part of the Borough of Southwest.


Votre visite débute à la sortie de la station de métro Bonaventure, au coin des rues Saint-Antoine et de la Cathédrale. À chaque étape vous devrez vous rendre dans une zone prédéfinie où vous attendent des instructions et une question à répondre pour passer à l'étape suivante.

Your tour begins at the exit of Bonaventure subway station, at the corner of Saint-antoine and de la Cathédrale. At each step you must go in a predefined area where you'll receive instructions and a question to answer to advance to the next step.

Votre principale difficulté sera d'obtenir une réception GPS acceptable pour compléter le jeu. Pour cette raison, j'ai créé des zones assez grandes. À chaque point zéro, les éléments à identifier peuvent être à plus de 20 mètres. Laissez le temps à votre GPS de bien de positionner, soyez patient et surtout... amusez-vous!

Your main challenge will be to get an acceptable GPS reception to complete the game. For this reason, I have created large areas. At each Zero Point, the elements to identify can be far over 20 meters. Allow time for your GPS to position well, be patient and above all ... have fun!
