Geocache Description:

ExploreWV's
Haunted Challenge

Flinderation Tunnel

Photobucket

ExploreWV’s third geocaching series is Haunted WV, which takes geocachers to 20 of the Mountain State’s spookiest locations – that’s asylums, prisons, cemeteries, and much more. Some of these cache sites have even been featured on TV shows such as SyFy’s Ghost Hunters, TLC’s Ghost Adventures, and MTV’s Fear.

Keeping with ExploreWV tradition, there will be a challenge associated with the Haunted WV series. If you choose to complete the challenge, you must “collect the ghosts” in each geocache and place them on an official Haunted WV Bingo Card. The first 100 people to complete the challenge will be awarded a limited-edition Haunted WV t-shirt so you can let everyone know that you’ve been spooked in West Virginia. (Limited sizes available)

To register for the Haunted WV series and to download your Haunted WV Bingo Card, visit us online at Geocache WV. You may also add us on Facebook at Explore WV.

***Cache is not at the posted coordinates***

Located near Salem on the eastern end of the North Bend Rail Trail is the infamous Flinderation Tunnel, an old railroad tunnel that is the scene of a disastrous accident involving unwarned tunnel workers and a locomotive in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Like many West Virginia haunted locations, Flinderation Tunnel has also been featured on paranormal shows and it’s said that phantom trains are seen as well as sounds of footsteps and train wheels screeching against the now non-existent train tracks.

From the posted coordinates, proceed east on the rail trail. After rounding the bend, you will see the tunnel. As a matter of fact, you can see clear through the tunnel. But don't let that fool you. It is quite dark inside. And wet. And cold. As a matter of fact, as you approach the tunnel, you can feel the cold breeze coming out of the tunnel. You need to go to the other end of the tunnel. You will get wet and muddy. You will hear the dripping of water as you go through (or is that footsteps?)

Once you have exited the east end of the tunnel, you need to turn around and look at the tunnel face. Don't look up too far- that's where the cemetery is. You need to read the single digit number located at the very top of the tunnel face, right in the middle. As you were coming through the tunnel, you surely noticed all of the alcoves located along the tunnel walls. This is where one would take shelter in the event of a train passing while you were in the tunnel. Hopefully you would have time to get to one. Not everyone did.

As you proceed back through the tunnel, count the alcoves on the right side. When your count matches the number you got from the tunnel face, stop and begin your search for stage 1. As you are facing the alcove, you are within five feet of the stage. You are looking for a fake rock. It will contain the coordinates for the final, in which you should focus your search on the North side of the trail.

Final is located along the trail, not far from the tunnel.

Please use etiquette and be courteous when geocaching and place the container exactly where you found it. If there are any problems with the cache including maintenance alerts, please inform ExploreWV as soon as possible. Do not wander far from the cache site and be aware that some of these locations may not be suitable for the faint of the heart.

Special thanks to pbump for placing and maintaining this geocache.
