A Bridge Not-so-far Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

NCreviewer: It's been brought to my attention that this cache is placed at an active RR bridge. I regret that I did not spot this at the initial review.

Per the current geocaching listing requirements/guidelines (guidelines):

Caches may be quickly archived if we see the following (which is not exhaustive):

By submitting a cache listing, you assure us that you have adequate permission to hide your cache in the selected location. However, if we see a cache description that mentions ignoring "No Trespassing" signs (or any other obvious issues), your listing may be immediately archived. We also assume that your cache placement complies with all applicable laws. If an obvious legal issue is present, or is brought to our attention, your listing may be immediately archived.

Please remove your container ASAP.

Regretfully,

Thanks,

Geocache Description:

A Bridge No-so-far is NOT a child friendly cache and, although it is not extremely difficult, it is not intended for the casual cacher. If not altogether necessary, some degree of fitness and agility surely will be helpful. If you do not want to unnecessarily chance being interrupted, you should not search or be seen searching during normal working hourse. BE SURE TO READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. DO NOT SEARCH ON THE RAIL LINE!

LET ME EMPHASIZE THAT DESPITE WHAT THE SATELLITE PHOTO SEEMS TO SHOW, THE CACHE IS NOT ON THE RAIL LINE OR HIGHER THAN OR AT OR EVEN VERY NEAR THE LEVEL OF THE RAIL LINE. YOU SHOULD NOT SEARCH THERE!

A Bridge No-so-far was placed as a memorial to Burke County’s Greatest Generation, of which my father’s siblings, all of whom lived and died in Burke County, were charter members. They grew up during the Great Depression and they survived the Second World War on their ways to successful lives. My aunt was a school teacher for 42 years, most of them in Burke County, and two of my uncles, along with my father, served in World War II. Unlike my father who was in the field artillery and served primarily in Italy, my uncles were glider soldiers and saw extensive action with the 82d Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division, respectively, in North Africa, at Normandy, and throughout the European Theater of Operations.

The cache is a lift-top lozenge box covered with duct tape and fitted with a magnetically-assisted closure. Inside it are a geocache statement, log, small pencil and pencil sharpener, and two items I thought were very appropriate for this particular cache. For the FTF and the STF are a brand new, freshly minted Liberty Nickel and, in case you find them as handy as I do, a new miliary P-38 pocket/key chain can opener.

As a demolition specialist with the 101st Airborne Division, the job of one of my uncles was blowing up bridges (the other was a litter bearer with the 82d Airborne Division), and A Bridge Not-so-far cache is located above, in a way, what probably is Burke County‘s oldest bridge, the Hunting Creek Railroad Bridge that was completed in 1860 (although it was not used until 1868, following the Civil War). Above the old bridge and the remains of yet another bridge beside it is the 1910 railway bridge built that is still in use.

In season, there is poison ivy -- and possibly some snakes and spiders, etc. -- in the area, so proceed with caution. Depending upon your direction and means of approach, you may find it helpful to cross one of the bridges, however, it is not necessary to cross or walk along the rail line to access this cache, and I do not recommend that you do so. Finally, all the steel around may affect your GPS; but the indicated coordinates are quite accurate.

If you do not want to unnecessarily chance being interrupted, you should not search or be seen searching during normal working hourse. THE CACHE IS BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE RAIL LINE! DO NOT SEARCH ON THE RAIL LINE, INCLUDING THE TIES AND THE AREAS BETWEEN OR UNDER THEM!

FOR THE EARLIER CACHERS WHO SEARCHED FOR THIS CACHE, i WANT TO ADD THAT BASED UPON THE COMMENTS IN THEIR DNF LOGS, I MOVED THE CACHE TO A MORE ACCESSABLE AND MUCH MORE OBVIOUS HIDE EVEN FARTHER BELOW TRACK LEVEL. I HATED TO DO THAT BECAUSE I WAS SO PROUD OF MY HIDE, BUT WHAT GOOD IS A CACHE THAT NO ONE EVER FINDS?

*******CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS TO Lazer Eye FOR HIS THIRD FTF OF ONE OF MY CACHES.*******
