Geocache Description:

This is Cache number 1 of 5 in the Railroad Grade series. (please read below for details on the entire series) This on should be fairly simple for the experienced cacher. Fairly close to the trail head, wanted to start things off on a positive note! IF YOU PLAN ON DOING ALL 5 CACHES IN THIS SERIES, PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE NUMBER LISTED ON THE INSIDE OF THE CONTAINER LID!!!! **Just a heads-up, Unfortunately the last and final cache in this series is missing! **

This Cache is number 1 of 5 in the Railroad Grade Series. This series follows the old Sanora railroad grade used in the 1800’s for logging and mining purposes. As with all grades, the slope is controlled to a consistent level making this a perfect trail for mountain biking. It can of course also be hiked but I recommend a bike given both the distance needed to cover and the mostly down-hill nature of the trail. There are some breaks in the grade but for the most part, a novice bike rider could handle this ride. (including children although I would not bring a child on training wheels or anything of the like) From trailhead (coordinates listed below) to pickup area (coordinates listed below) it is about a two hour ride. The series is best done in order, less you wish to ride/walk uphill the entire way. (not recommended) For the most enjoyable experience, riders can be dropped off at the trailhead (N 38 11.207’, W 120 1.158’) which is off of Old Strawberry road and pickup up again at the parking lot of the Lyons Reservoir (N 38 5.680’, W 120 9.792’). If you wish to bike and do not have proper equipment, I recommend The Pinecrest Hub which is on Pinecrest lake and less than a mile from the trailhead.
