Geocache Description:

Brand New Box placed on May 17th, 2021. A while back, some terrible person broke the post for the benchmark and stole it!!! We are so sad. Enjoy the scenery! Please cover well / top up and it will help keep it dry. Love reading everyone's comments! Thanks!

You will find the original 1885 Leffingwell BenchMark here. It is called The Leffingwell Triangulation Station. About 1863 the first small sawmill was built near this area by William Leffingwell. It is now known as Leffingwell Landing and is the location today of the Leffingwell Landing State Picnic Grounds on Moonstone Beach Drive, (located approximately 1/2 mile to the south either along a walking path or by car on Moonstone Beach Dr.). There was a small pier near here and Cambria prospered as an active seaport, beginning as a fishing and quicksilver mining town, then later became important for its dairy and lumber exports. By 1880, Cambria's 7000 residents made it the second largest town in San Luis Obispo County, all due to the dairy ranches, mining, and shipping which provided a stable job base with plentiful resources, located in a beautiful scenic area. Today, tourism is Cambria's primary industry. Mr. and Mrs. Leffingwell and their seven adult grown children arrived in 1858 and settled near here on unclaimed government land. Securing it by building a home,& cultivating the land, he acquired this land at Moonstone. He established several businesses, including the lumber mill, a forge, a flour mill, a "landing" and eventually a wharf. From this benchmark: turn and face towards Highway One /parking lot to the east. The cache is approximately 50 feet ahead. CAUTION: Enjoy this breathtaking view, but do not venture too close to the edge to the west of the BenchMark, there are no fences here..... The Pacific Ocean below.
