Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the shore, above high water near the top of the low cliffs at the northern end of Manse Bay on the coast of South Ronaldsay. The shore is rocky with large stones and small boulders and may be slippery if conditions are wet and care should be taken here. There is a grassy path along the top of the shore and several fairly easy places to descend to the shore itself at Manse Bay.

The walk into Manse Bay from Eastside will take you past a drystone built disused windmill and a replica Pictish symbol stone. There is a seal colony at the far end of Eastside and you may be lucky enough to see seals swimming close to the coast. The views along the coast are stunning. Near the cache there is a walled in mineshaft and all along the shore at this point there is clear evidence of mining activity. The mine produced galena, a lead ore, and was in use in the last half of the 18th century. Parking is available by the church at Eastside (N 58° 48.159 E 002° 55.113). An easy scramble is needed to reach the cache and although the cliffs are low, grassy and are not too steep, care should be taken when retrieving the cache. This shore is prone to severe storms and winds so please ensure you replace the stones carefully to avoid the cache being lost. Do not interfere with any obvious drystone work as this has been done to reinforce the bank. The cache itself is a medium click lock container holding a log book and pencil and some swappables.
