LOOKOUT Lookout Traditional Cache

The Volcanic Auto Tour guide says “not recommended for buses or motorhomes.” It calls it a “rough road”, but it was in better shape than my driveway, so most passenger cars should have no trouble. Just drive up to the top of Lookout Mountain, grab the cache, and enjoy the views.
Turn East off of Hwy 395 onto Lookout Mountain Road which is directly across the Hwy from the beginning of Mammoth Scenic (escape) route. Follow 3S06 to S02 (left) which takes you to the top. The guide says “…an eagle’s view of the Long Valley Caldera and other volcanic features”. “At the top of Lookout Mountain you are standing on one of the many resurgent domes uplifted after the collapse of the caldera. Look for Crowley Lake, 18 miles to the south; Mammoth Mountain, 8 miles to the southwest; and Glass Mountain (the long ridge beginning with Bald Mountain Fire Lookout), 14 miles to the southeast. These landmarks form the edges of the caldera. For comparison, the caldera left behind from the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption was about one mile in diameter.” There is a lot of obsidian on the ground. Years ago when we were here there was a lookout tower with a couple that watched for fires, but no signs of the tower now.
Cache is stocked with: die cast race car, 2 magnets, key ring flashlight, clip, rubber duck (pirate) and a Ulysses S Grant $1 coin, Rutherford B Hayes $1 coin, 1974 Ike dollar coin, and a bicentennial Kennedy half dollar. First to find, please leave two of the coins for the next people. I’m a little worried about how I concealed the cache, so if it was showing, please find stuff to hide it better, with out making it look unnatural. It took about 10+ minutes to come down, so the trip up should be 15-20 minutes.
