Geocache Description:

Shenzhen Bay Sports Center

Shenzhen was the host city for the 26th Summer Universiade 2011. Twenty-two new sports venues were built for the games. The Shenzhen Bay Sports Center (深圳湾体育中心), also known as Spring Cocoon (春茧), and the venue for the games' opening ceremony, is a dazzling addition to Shenzhen's tourism map.

The 2-billion yuan or 304-million US dollar project covers an area of 333,000 sqm and is located in the city's Nanshan District. The construction of the Spring Cocoon which integrates a stadium, a natatorium and gymnasium is a feat of brilliance. The project took only 21 months to complete.

The 3 sports facilities are embraced by an innovative cocoon nest made up of tens of thousands of tons of steel. They're connected by a platform elevated about 6m above the ground. On the platform, there's a basket-shaped steel structure about 20m tall which is at the core of the building. Workers twisted steel into a nest shaped grid and then cut and install glass panes to fit the different sized openings in the building's roof. The Spring Cocoon was initially designed as stand-by venue for training and warm-up sessions for athletes but was later selected to host the opening ceremony and official competition.
