Geocache Description:

This cache is based on a hill often used by local athletes to improve their fitness. The cache is a multi with the co-ordinates for the second part in the first cache, both should be easy to find and there is plenty of parking nearby.

This cache is placed in honour of all the Isle of Man’s sports minded people who not only enjoy playing and watching sport, but also the ones who go on to greater things in the sporting world, through hard work, dedication, determination, practice and training . One of the many training methods used by sports men/women around the world is a system called:

THE FARTLEK METHOD. Fartlek, which means "speed play" in Swedish, is a form of interval training which puts stress on the whole aerobic energy system due to the continuous nature of the exercise. The difference between this type of training and continuous training is that the intensity or speed of the exercise varies, meaning that aerobic and anaerobic systems can be put under stress. It differs from traditional interval training in that it is unstructured; intensity and/or speed can be varied whenever the athlete wishes. Most fartlek sessions last a minimum of 45 minutes and can vary from aerobic walking to anaerobic sprinting. Fartlek training is generally associated with running, but can include almost any kind of exercise. Fartlek training was developed in 1937 by Swedish coach Gösta Holmér (1891–1983) and has been adopted by many physiologists/sportspeople since. It was designed for the downtrodden Swedish cross country running teams that had been thrashed throughout the 1920s by Paavo Nurmi and the Finns. Holmér's plan used a faster-than-race pace and concentrated on both speed and endurance training.

ADVANTAGES OF FARTLEK. Fitness benefits, one of the main reasons for the success of fartlek training is that it can be adapted to the needs of the individual. Unlike continuous training, fartlek training can benefit participants of field games such as football, hockey, basketball, tennis, cricket and rugby as it develops aerobic and anaerobic capacities which are both used in these sports. To take this step further, athletes can make the most of the flexibility of fartlek training by mimicking the activities which would take place during their chosen sport or event. This cache is based on a hill often used by local athletes to improve their fitness. I’d be interested to know the time you take between caches (today, I managed it in 10 minutes on crutches, 40 years ago 10 times in under 20 minutes).

THIS AREA IS MUGGLE CENTRAL SO STEALTH REQUIRED ! After finding this cache it is well worth a visit to our local museum (very close to final cache) which has just opened a display on “Our Sporting Life”. http://www.oursportinglife.co.uk/media--press/a-celebration-of-manx-sporting-life

Congratulations to twoofnine on being FTF
