Geocache Description:

Do NOT go on private property. Stay on the lighthouse land only. Yes you can go down the stairs!

Notes added 5-11-11 from an email by Red Witch.

"While it is the oldest mainland lighthouse in NB, it is not the oldest nor is it the only one of its kind. Head Harbour (1829) is not only the oldest in NB but the oldest wooden LH in Canada. It was followed by Gannet Rock (1831) and Machias Seal Island (1832). While it is true that the lighthouse has had its share of close calls, it has been under the stewardship of the St Andrews Civic Trust (not the Charlotte County Historical Society) since 2002 when the tower was moved off the crumbling wharf. The land that it now sits on was acquired the following year and the badly deteriorating lantern that had been boarded up for years was removed. On Oct 24th of this year a replica of the old lantern (that originally came from Head Harbour in 1841) was placed atop the renovated tower. It is one of NINE octagonal wooden towers remaining in New Brunswick. The lighthouse was built in 1833. It is presently not being operated, as it was de-commissioned back in 1938 and sold to a private party."

These notes are from the original geocache at this site. The original cache was archived earlier in 2011.

"This is one of the first colonial lighthouse to be built in New Brunswick Two others were built in 1832 at Gannet Rock and Machais Seal Island.

It was built as an octagonal wooden tower with a red lantern room. The only original part of the lighthouse left is the tower as the lantern room has been replaced over the years. This is currently the oldest surviving light house in New Brunswick, and one of the most endangered. It is the only standing 8 sided wooden light house left in the province. The lighthouse was nearly lost in the 1960's when the sea wall below it collapsed causing the light to tilt 30 degrees to the side. Thankfully it was saved by the Charlotte County Historical Society, The tower is maintained by the society now and is avaialable for people to come and see some of New Brunswicks history."
