dartymoor: This was my first hide, and a second choice. I was never really happy with its position and it's time to go. I went out this morning and retrieved the cache.

Geocache Description:

Close to the road on the edge of the common.

This area was used from 1943 until just after D-Day as a fuel depot (American Army) and searchlight base (British Army). There are a large number of concrete bases throughout the common, especially to the north and west, housing fuel depots, barracks, Nissan huts and bases for searchlights. The area to the Southeast has been quarried and no trace remains.

When the American Army packed up and went home, reportedly they dug a great big pit and buried all kinds of machinery, including Willys Jeeps and Harley Davidson motorbikes as it was cheaper than shipping it back. Alas, nobody seems to know where this pit is!
