Geocache Description:

North by Northwest – N-NW

This cache is just barely large enough to hold a geocoin. It should be an easy find in a beautiful park. A park that seems to contain a lot of squirrels. Please hide the cache well so that it doesn’t get muggled. You should bring your own pen or pencil to sign the log.

Have fun!

Henry Shaw gave St. Louis Tower Grove Park, in 1868. It has areas for softball, soccer, tennis, as well as walking, jogging, and biking. The park has a lot of interesting buildings, art, trees, and a fountain. Impressive gates can be found at many of the entrances to the park.

Tower Grove Park is a nearly rectangular tract 7,676 feet long and 1,550 feet wide, as originally platted. The area granted by Mr. Shaw’s deed was 276.76 acres, but the outer border, 200 feet wide, containing 74.74 acres, was reserved for leasing for villa residences, but this never materialized. Tower Grove Park is now a unit enclosed by four streets, and contains 289 acres. It is the second in size in St. Louis, and exceeds the next largest local park by more than 100 acres.

Mr. Shaw personally donated to the Park three noteworthy bronze statues and other works of art. The park has many pavilions: Carriage Pavilion, Chinese Pavilion, Cypress Pavilions, Humboldt North Pavilion, Humboldt South Pavilion, Lily Pond Pavilion, Old Playground Pavilion, Pool Pavilion, Sons of Rest Pavilion, Stone Pavilion, and Turkish Pavilion.

There are statues including:

•Ferdinand von Miller's William Shakespeare dedicated 23 April 1878;

•Miller's Alexander von Humboldt, dedicated 24 November 1878;

•Miller's Christopher Columbus, dedicated 12 October 1886; and

•Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, originally commissioned for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition; moved to Tower Grove Park, 1968.

There are busts of some of Shaw's favorite composers near the Music Stand including:

•Howard Kretschmar's Mozart (1882);

•Kretschmar's Rossini (1882);

•Ferdinand von Miller's Beethoven (1884);

•Miller's Wagner (1884);

•Gounod by Carlo Nicoli (1886); and

•Verdi (1886) by Nicoli.

Enjoy this beautiful park, and everything about it. You can learn more about the park from this link: (visit link) This park also has several other nice caches.
