Geocache Description:

A large reserve on a steep, south-facing chalk hillside and hill-top, once the site of Winchester's ancient fair, and a large army camp during WW1. Now a butterfly and moth reserve, it has been extended twice to take in arable land for conversion back to chalk downland.

Fifty years ago Magdalen Hill Down was open, grazed downland famous for Adonis Blues. Much of it was then ploughed-up for arable cultivation and the steeper slopes left to invading scrub.

The area can be accessed through various entrances and gates of varied accessibility via kissing gates and stiles, but the cache is hidden almost in the centre of the reserve, not on the main path but close by.

The cache includes a log book and a pen and such, as well as a disposable camera, with which each finder is to take a photo of themselves or their surroundings and place it back in the cache. Please could you only take one photo per group, at arms length should be fine.

We will post a link to the photographs when they're developed. So please report if you found the camera's film is finished.
