The Old A1 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not repaired it I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Many thanks,
DalesmanX

Geocache Description:

A short walk along the old A1 which is now Longacre Wood.

Square Mile Wood was as named, a wooded area covering one square mile- stretching from The Angel of the North down to the East Coast Main Line and along the banks of the old marshalling yard. However, this woodland was sliced in half when the Western Bypass was built to divert the ever growing busy A1 around the centers of Gateshead and Newcastle.

Since the 30's local residents have wanted such a bypass, and, in 1981, the western bypass was finally completed. The road is the clearing where this geocache is placed. Since then, the road has been moved further north to its current whereabouts to exactly cut square-mile wood in two even parts- the western; now called Longacre Wood.

You will see from the clearing where the old A1 once lay and you can see large chunks of Tarmac in the clearing. The cache is a usual Tupperware and is a nice place for a short autumn/ winter stroll with the GeoDogs as the dark nights close in! The path leading to the cache is always a little boggy so you may want to consider your footwear.

As always, we gratefully appreciate any OTS maintenance and people rehiding the container as found!

Happy Hunting!
