This is #12 of the Oyate Trail Series. For a detailed Oyate trail description, see Cache 11.
August 25, 1804 was a stiflingly hot day when members of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery visited Spirit Mound. They hiked 9 miles to this site because they had heard from the local natives that "little people with big heads and very sharp arrows that shoot far" inhabited the mound. The locals were terrified of the place. At the mound the expedition did not find any little people but did find a most beautiful landscape. Spirit Mount is just a few miles north of the cache on Hwy. 19 and is now a 320 acre state historic site which hosts a national recreational trail to the summit. This cache is NOT heavy snow friendly.
