His poem pictures the maidens with "baskets berry-filled," watching...
... "in idle mood
The gleam and shade of lake and wood;
The beach the keen light smote,
The white sail of a boat;
Swan flocks of lilies shoreward lying,
In sweetness, not in music, dying;
Hardback, and virgin's-bower,
And white-spiked clethra-flower."
Boating, swimming and fishing are all allowed on the lake which is busy year around. The lake is 360-acres and averages about 12 feet deep. The deepest point is about 35 feet. Lake Attitash is good largemouth bass and chain pickerel water, but it is primarily known as one of the best northern pike waters in the Northeast District. Pike in excess of 20 pounds have been reported from here. In the winter, it is a popular lake for ice fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
The cache is a winter friendly micro. You will need a non-motorized boat to access this cache due to the gunderboom and shallow water. The gunderboom is located about 500' before the cache location and can be crossed by non-motorized boats.
