This Bridge Has Burned Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RampagerBOH: The storm surge from Hurricane Michael washed away the cache and most of the GZ with it. So with a heavy heart, I must close this listing until the park is repaired. I will plan on other caches when its safe to do so.

Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden on the former foot of the old DuPont Bridge.

The bridge was built from 1927 to 1929 as part of the US 98 Coastal Highway Project. This was years before Tyndall Field, the forerunner of Tyndall Air Force Base, was established. The bridge served as the connector to Tyndall Air Force Base until the bridge was closed in 1965 when the current bridge replaced it. The swing section of the old bridge was demolished leaving the remaining spans open for fishing until January 2006, when it was deemed structurally unsound for the public. The remaining spans were demolished in late 2008, ending the run of this local landmark. Most of the bridge's trusses were shipped out and submerged intact into parts of the Gulf of Mexico to become artificial reefs, while the remaining structure was salvaged for scrap. Enjoy the view here in Earl Gilbert Park but also watch for boating muggles.

Congrats to Artican and The Siblings for the FTF!
