Navnet kommer sannsynligvis fra da en fole ble skremt og hoppet over gjelet her. Det var før det ble laget bru over elva.
Selve gjelet har sin tilblivelse mange år før den tid. Under siste istid lå det store mengder is her. Når den smeltet ble smeltevannet presset med enorme krefter ned under isen. Her som berggrunnen består av forholdsvis mjuk skiferstein, har vann og grus frest seg ned i berget og laget mange store og dype jettegryter.
Nede i bunnen av canyon kan en skimte elva Sølna renne hastig forbi.
Here you can see a spectacular river Sølna and a lot of kettle basins in the bottom of the canyon.
During the last ice age, melting water drained through the crevasses to the bottom of the glacier. The melting water accumulated into streams with enormous power. Sometimes there were turbulences in the water and that is the origin for the develepment of kettle basins. Within these turbulences in the water were high pressures and velocity.
The cause for the erosion of the rock is the sand and the gravel in the water. These parts carved the kettle basins.
