Geocache Description:

Everyone knows all about Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith. You don't need a geocache from me to remind you! But how many people outside of Katoomba are aware of little Kingsford Smith Memorial Park, hidden away in South Katoomba? Now you can find out . . .

The purpose of this cache is to bring you to the environs of the somewhat obscure Kingsford Smith Memorial Park in Katoomba. Do you realise that there's a small blue bandstand here? And a convenient -- though extremely basic -- toilet that's open 24/7? And a little open area of lawn and a place for picnics? Well, there are in fact a lot of teenagers and young people who hang out here too, but the park is a resource for the whole community. And of course the site and its memorial structure is a modest reminder of 'our Smithy' who -- way back in 1928 -- was the first person to fly across the Pacific Ocean from the United States to Australia. He's the most famous flyer this country has ever produced. Check 'Wikipedia' and read up about him, if you're unsure. He's a genuine hero and an inspiration. There are several ways to enter this park, and most people, I guess, view it 'down and away' as they drive along heavily-treed Gang Gang Street on the north side. All you can see are trees and bushes far below from this angle. But you can actually much, much more easily enter from the south, from Vale Street. In fact, you can almost drive right to GZ . . . The geocache is now a small, and the protective camo is fairly evident . . . Absolutely no need to delve deep into the bushes. No need to dig or scuff around in the leaf mulch. The protective camo is in plain sight. Just pick it up! Hope you'll investigate this unusual little park as part of your Katoomba experience! from Wikipedia: "Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith MC, AFC (9 February 1897 – 8 November 1935), often called by his nickname Smithy, was an early Australian aviator. In 1928, he earned global fame when he made the first trans-Pacific flight from the United States to Australia. He also made the first non-stop crossing of the Australian mainland, the first flights between Australia and New Zealand, and the first eastward Pacific crossing from Australia to the United States. He also made a flight from Australia to London, setting a new record of 10.5 days." (His surname is actually Kingsford Smith -- not Kingsford-Smith or Smith!)
