Geocache Description:

Statue of stray dog

Who was Harawene? : Harawene was a little stray dog who made her home along the Te Ngae Rd, Rotorua's most busiest highway, in the early 1990's after she ran away from her Tokoroa family when they came to Rotorua. Over the years the little terrier cross became an icon for the area, forever keeping vigil along the road, watching the cars going by. Sadly around the 29th of April, 2008 she went missing (feared dead) sending locals into weeks of mourning. Her little kennel, which stood along Te Ngae Rd, was soon covered in flowers and letters of condolences by distraught locals. The land where Harawene lived is owned by Ngati Whakaue Tribal Lands who proudly boasted she was their "tenant for 15 years" and were keen for a memorial to be erected, a permanent thank you to a little dog who gave so much joy to so many people. Ironically, despite Harawene running off whenever anyone tried to get close to her, it never stopped people doting on her by leaving food. Steve Brown and Gloria Jennings were two of the locals who fed the car watching dog. Sadly Steve Brown spotted the remains of what he thought was a cat or possum on the busy road but on further inspection believes it was probably the remains of Harawene. If it was in fact the world famous dog it is now resting in peace in Mr Borwn's garden
Please watch kids.Busy road and water close by. Parking further along or opposite at McD's
