This cache is very near to the renowned Crocodile Rock. Possibly one of the most popular rocks in the whole of Scotland, the Crocodile Rock takes on a very menacing look in a stormy weather when the waves are breaking over it and it resembles a real sea monster!
Its origins go back to around 1896 and, as you might expect, involve alcohol. A retired architect from Glasgow, Robert Brown, (one of a group known locally as “The Toddy Brigade”) following his lunchtime drink was found propping up the door of the pub opposite what is now the Crocodile. He enquired of one of his buddies, “How many had I the day Jimmie?” to which Jimmie casually replied, “Oh just the usual, Broon!” “Aye, aye, just that, but I have an idea that rock,” pointing with his stick, “is awful like a crocodile.”
The following day the people going about their business were bemused to see Mr Brown walking along the street bearing several brushes and three pots of paint in black, white and red. To this day the crocodile has remained in the same colours, although frequently renovated.
Once you have found the cache, if you're over 18 you can still enjoy a refreshment at the pub which contributed to Broon's inspiration; alternatively if you're in need of something warmer there's a fine cafe nearby!
Please replace the cache exactly as found - take note of which side is magnetic so it sticks! Thanks.
